The challenge

Many students find it hard to have an organized timetable and get real-time information passed across to them, Being organised as a student required a lot of discipline and proper planning. With different social media and chat applications, most students belong to different groups, and passing information in such groups is chaotic, classes with a larger number of students have to create multiple groups making it hard for information to get across to everyone at the same time.

Creating an all-in-one experience for students to manage classes, timetables and class list.

MySario is a personalized class management solution for class managers in the university to pass information, manage classes and quickly generate the class list for their lecturers. MySario is focused more on creating an effortless experience for students, class managers and their lecturers, providing a friendly platform for communication amongst students and seamless class updates in real-time.

Understanding the users and their needs

I started by getting to know the potential users, what're their motivations, pain point and behaviours.

I conducted research targeted at students (class members and class representatives) to understand what issues they had with using social media platforms as their means of communication for the class.

* Screenshots of the survey form

The result of the survey informed my design decision.

The Class Rep:

They are not able to pin important announcements. They can’t create timetables, and posting assignments and test schedules are tedious. Most of them have to create multiple groups as the preferred means of communication can only contain a limited number of accounts. Their messages may get covered by multiple chats that come after the important ones.

The Class members:

They can’t access previous messages before they were added to the class groups, most of them need to have their timetable mobile, contact class executives with ease, their class groups are always noisy and some people pass on wrong information.

Users Needs

The user survey conducted informed the major pain point of the users

  • The ability of the Admin to pin important announcements.

  • Increase the group limit for participants

  • Get information and class schedule on time

  • Have their timetables handy

  • Have their assignment questions and files easily available without searching through previous chats.

The solution

This is where MySario App comes in to help students

  • have access to class timetables, Exam and test schedules,

  • Get access to class representatives,

  • have important messages separated from other discussions,

  • make their assignment questions and files easily downloadable.

Mysario Admin

Mysario Admin is specially designed to solve the problem of class representatives.

  • ability to create essential messages

  • Create and manage class timetables, exams and test schedule

  • upload assignment and file for download

  • Assign roles to other class representatives

User persona

From the insight gained from the quantitative analysis, I created a goal-oriented user persona for the project. Though the project has two main types of users, I focused on the user who makes the most use of the app since the process are the same but differentiated by the roles.

Information Architecture

I started the visual design by organizing information about the application and structuring the information on the application to help users comfortably navigate and complete specific tasks.

Starting off the design

From the insight I gained from the research and brainstorming, I started off sketching the solution on a notepad and then later designed low-fidelity wireframes for different screens across the application.

MySario Design system

Before designing the high fidelity of a big project, I always consider how the product will scale; I designed a detailed component library that would be visible in a different part of the system/project, the design system includes the colour style, typography, buttons, form style, grid setting, content cards etc.
The Mysario design system was built to give room for scalability of the system and easy integration for the developers

User Testing

I and the team conducted a user test to see how users use the application in a real-life scenario and if it satisfies their needs. From the user testing, most users were satisfied while some people wanted extra features like direct messaging of individuals and conducting polls. We also notices a need to improve the onboarding process and we had to reiterate to create a better onboarding.

High Fidelity Design

After testing with the wireframe, I went ahead to redefine the design to make it visually appealing.

Lessons

This project was an opportunity to work on large-scale production and certainly, there must be lessons learnt and what I would do better next time.
I learnt how to create a detailed information architecture. I worked on a design system. I also conducted user testing properly.

Takeaways

To improve the usability of a product, it is necessary to spend enough time gathering data from users and interviewing users to understand their pain points and how they want a product to work.
I did a lot of iterations and I understood that every design must go through many iterations, to get the best experience.
